As kids grow up, their likes and dislikes will start to change. They won’t be interested in the same toys they once had, and slowly start to become their own person. This can be a great thing to watch and help them throughout their journey, but you may wonder if they still need their pediatric dentist. They are no longer a child, but they aren’t necessarily an adult either. Keep reading to learn why they should still see this kind of dental specialist.

1.)  Your Teen’s Oral Health Is Still Developing

Your teen will likely want to be a bit more independent than they were before. They might fight you about being an adult, but it’s important to remember they are still developing. When it comes to their oral health, their teeth and jawbone may not have fully formed. Their pediatric dentist is here to monitor their smiles and ensure that they continue to grow as they should, and not cause any problems.

2.)  Pediatric Dentists Are Trained for This Age Group

It’s not until around ages 18 and 22 that young patients’ faces and jaws finish developing. Up until this time, a pediatric dentist has special training and knowledge. They have expertise in growing smiles, and that includes the teenage years! While your loved one may not be too thrilled about going to their office, you can rest assured that their dentist will be able to watch out for various dental problems.

Orthodontic issues and wisdom teeth development (to name a few!) all have early warning signs that indicate they’ll spell trouble. When they are caught before they lead to pain or damage, then your teen can have a healthy smile that’s as strong as it can be.

3.)  Your Teen May Have a Trusting Relationship with Their Dentist

Many adults often avoid going to the dentist altogether. They may not feel like their provider has their best interest at heart and, in turn, skip needed checkups and cleanings. However, if your teen enjoys going to their pediatric dentist, then they may be more likely to keep up with good oral health habits! By learning the importance of these visits, they can keep their teeth in the best shape they can be and avoid a wide range of oral health issues.

Although your teen may have grown out of their plushies and toys, they should still visit their pediatric dentist! They are still developing and can benefit from the expertise of this specialist and have a happy smile they feel proud of.
