What Exactly Is a Frenectomy?

Lip and tongue ties occur when bands of tissue in the mouth, called frenulums or frenums, restrict the movement of the lips or tongue. A frenectomy is the surgical procedure used to correct these problems. We carefully remove or modify the tissue that is interfering with proper oral function. This opens the way for normal growth of the oral structures and can prevent a range of future complications, such as feeding difficulties, delayed speech, orthodontic issues, and more.
Why We Only Do Laser Frenectomies

Traditionally, frenectomies are performed with a regular scalpel. This method is effective, but it also has some significant downsides. For example, it may be uncomfortable, and there could be a significant amount of bleeding.
A laser frenectomy is better. Our LightScalpel CO2 laser is incredibly precise, and it cauterizes the tissue it cuts; this means there is little to no bleeding. The laser even kills bacteria, so the risk of infection is extremely low. It also comes with a quicker recovery time than procedures performed with a scalpel. Best of all, the procedure is remarkably comfortable, even for very young children.
How Does a Laser Frenectomy Work?

A laser frenectomy usually takes just a few minutes. We will make sure your child is unable to squirm around during their procedure, and we may also administer local anesthesia to numb their mouth. Then, we use a highly concentrated beam of light (the laser) to carry out the procedure. Babies are encouraged to feed immediately after their frenectomy. Your child might experience a bit of soreness after their appointment, but recovery is usually fast and easy.
